Shocking! Down in the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues( PFII) the committee is currently dealing with a significant resolution on indigenous languages that has completely altered the power dynamics on the floor and led to considerable drama. While the UN supports diverse viewpoints, the committee has decided to form a single large group.
What began as three separate factions has now combined into one massive alliance, leaving little room for disagreement. Tensions are rising as this united front, led by the USA, Amazon Watch, and CWIS, pushes for a “global standard” that many worry will infringe on national sovereignty. India and other supporters are backing a controversial plan for a UN funded Global Spelling Bee and mandatory “indigenous-first” education. This merged group is now calling for the creation of the UN Heritage Cloud (UNHC), a digital vault to store all oral histories and dictionaries on a global server. The real issue lies in the vast scope of the mandates. From forcing hospitals to hire doctors based on language to requiring the IMF and World Bank to fund TikTok campaigns and theater productions, the ambition is immense. The committee is no longer a place for debate but a giant entity. While the sponsors claim they are supporting at-risk languages, the reality is a forced agreement where the countries with the largest budgets set the rules for everyone else.
